Why "I’m fine" Can Quickly Become a Liability
When toughness becomes a strategic failure
In high pressure environments, "I’m fine" is the most dangerous lie we tell.
Whether you are in a high stakes advance meeting or navigating a tough show day with a grumpy crew, the industry standard is the same: stay stoic, keep moving, and ignore the red flags your system is throwing. We have been conditioned to believe that toughness means being a brick wall.
We tell ourselves to "toughen up buttercup" and push through. I think that's funny because as a founder who has spent over two decades in the trenches of the music industry, I’ve seen what happens when the brick wall finally cracks. I’ve lived it AND I know how it feels.
Reaction vs. Response
There is a massive difference between a biological reaction and a tactical response.
A reaction is your body’s automated, high stress physiological reflex. It is the surge of adrenaline, the shallow breath, and the "lasso-the-hurricane" energy that happens when your logic centers are forced offline. You don’t choose the reaction; your hardware does it for you.
A reponse is how you decide to act on that reaction.
This is where MicroMoments come in. They are the manual override for your system. They give you the space to recognize the physiological storm for what it is… simply a reaction… and choose a response that actually serves the gig. Instead of snapping at the stagehands or making a sloppy call because you’re stuck in survival mode, you’re back in the driver’s seat.
Normalizing the Survival Drive
When we are red-lining, our bodies look for an exit. It is completely normal to reach for whatever is closest to dull the noise. These are coping mechanisms, often maladaptive ones, that our systems use to try and find a baseline when the pressure is too high.
We see it everywhere: the extra drink at the hotel bar, drugs, gambling, sex, emotional eating, smoking, or retail therapy. These aren’t character flaws; they are desperate attempts by a dysregulated system to soothe itself. By integrating MicroMoments into your day, you give your system a cleaner way to regulate, making it easier to choose a response that actually serves you.
The Cost of the "Fine" Persona
We often wear a mask of competence, this "fine" persona, to keep the gig moving. But this fakeness isn’t sustainable. When you spend your life pretending the pressure isn't getting to you, the bill eventually comes due.
This sustained internal friction leads to severe health problems, chronic exhaustion, and massive relationship strain. You can only carry the weight of a show for so long before your body decides it’s finished, even if you aren't.
